and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is in exile on Patmos, and after receiving a divine command, he turns to see the one speaking to him. This vision is not just a personal encounter but a powerful revelation of Jesus Christ, who appears in glorious, symbolic form amidst the seven churches, represented as golden lampstands. The way Christ is depicted, dressed and adorned, carries significant meaning about His identity and authority in relation to His people.
What does it mean that Jesus appeared 'in the midst of the seven lampstands'?
This vision places Jesus directly in the middle of His churches, represented by the lampstands. He isn't distant or uninvolved; He is present, observing, and intimately connected with each one.
A Constant Watch:
This isn't just a symbolic placement; it speaks to His ongoing relationship with His people. He is in their midst, not just at the beginning or the end, but throughout their journey.
Why is Jesus described in such specific, majestic clothing?
The 'long robe' reaching to His feet and the 'golden sash' are not casual attire. These garments echo the vestments of the Old Testament high priest, signifying Jesus' ultimate priestly role. He is the one who bridges the gap between God and humanity.
A Kingly Dignity:
But these robes also speak of kingly authority and majesty. This is Christ not just as a sacrifice, but as the reigning King. The 'golden sash' signifies His divine authority, His righteousness, and His enduring power.
Why is this glorious figure called 'one like a son of man'?
This title, 'son of man,' is Jesus' own favorite way of referring to Himself in the Gospels. It emphasizes His humanity, His deep connection to us. Yet, in this vision, it's presented with divine glory that is awe-inspiring.

Bridging Worlds:
This phrase, especially with its roots in Daniel's vision of a divinely appointed figure receiving everlasting dominion, points to Jesus as both fully human and fully divine. He is the bridge between God and humanity, appearing here in a form that underscores His unique identity and authority.
