The text highlights that Jesus is not just like a son of man, but he is the Son of Man, appearing in human form but with regal and priestly attire. This long robe and golden sash, worn differently than usual, signify his kingly authority and rest, not readiness for earthly toil.
and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John has just heard a booming voice and turned to see the source, discovering seven golden lampstands. This vision of Christ, appearing "like a son of man" and dressed in regal priestly robes, is John's first encounter with the glorified Jesus since His ascension. The detailed description sets the stage for the powerful messages Jesus will deliver to each of the seven churches represented by the lampstands.
John sees a figure so glorious he's initially overwhelmed. But this isn't a stranger; it's the very Jesus he knew, now revealed in divine splendor.
The phrase 'one like a son of man' points directly to Jesus. While he often called himself this during his earthly ministry, signifying his humanity and solidarity with us, here it's used in a vision that echoes Daniel's prophecy of a divine, authoritative figure (Daniel 7:13). John sees Jesus in the midst of the lampstands, which represent the churches. This placement is crucial: it shows Jesus is intimately present with, observing, and sustaining each one of His people. He isn't distant; He walks among us.
The clothing John sees isn't just attire; it's a powerful statement of identity and role. What does this majestic 'robe' and 'golden sash' reveal about Jesus?
The 'garment down to the foot' and the 'golden sash' are rich with symbolism, evoking both kingly and priestly roles. This long robe, similar to what high priests wore, points to Jesus as our ultimate High Priest, interceding for us. However, the 'golden sash' worn 'about his chest' (rather than the loins, which often signified readiness for action) suggests a state of restful sovereignty and divine authority, like a king. This imagery combines His perfect mediation with His supreme rule. He is the King-Priest, perfectly equipped for His eternal work.
