Psalm 89:30-35

This verse, when read closely, doesn't just speak of future sin but points to an existing reality: God anticipates the inevitable failings of David's line. It’s a candid acknowledgment that even within a promised lineage, human imperfection means transgression is expected, not just a possibility. This prepares the ground for understanding that God's faithfulness transcends human frailty.
If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules, if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage delves into the conditional nature of God's covenant with David, explaining that while the dynasty is promised, its prosperity and continuation are contingent on obedience. The psalmist acknowledges that if David's descendants—his children—stray from God's commands and laws, they will face divine discipline, a consequence directly echoing earlier prophetic warnings. This sets the stage for the psalm's lament, as the current suffering of Israel implies these conditions have been met, yet the covenant's promises seem to have failed.
The psalm speaks of 'his children' forsaking God's law. Who are these children, and what does their straying mean for God's promises?
This verse points to the descendants of David, the kings of Israel. It's a stark reminder that even those in a special covenant relationship with God aren't immune to disobedience.
A Pattern of Disobedience
History shows a recurring cycle:
This highlights that human faithfulness is fragile, and even those in privileged positions can fall into sin.
Even when 'his children' falter, the psalm reveals something incredible about God's response. What is it?
While the verse lays out the potential for human failure, the surrounding verses (not quoted here) immediately pivot to God's steadfastness. This is the heart of the passage: human unfaithfulness doesn't cancel divine faithfulness.
