The text highlights that God performed these wonders "in the sight of their fathers," not just for the Israelites but also in the presence of the Egyptians, emphasizing the public demonstration of God's power and judgment against their oppressors. This specific mention of Zoan, a significant Egyptian city and likely the seat of Pharaoh's court, underscores that these were not private events but bold, public pronouncements intended to be seen and felt by those in power.
In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The psalmist is reflecting on Israel's history to teach the current generation, emphasizing how God's past faithfulness was met with their ancestors' repeated unfaithfulness. He begins by recounting God's mighty acts for Israel, not in chronological order, but starting with the wonders performed in Egypt to set the stage for the later narrative of their rebellion and God's subsequent judgments and mercy. This verse specifically introduces the miraculous events that occurred in Egypt, particularly in the region of Zoan, during their ancestors' time.
Why does the psalm mention 'Zoan' specifically when talking about God's wonders in Egypt? This ancient city held a significant place in both Egyptian and Israelite history.
