God's presence is awe-inspiring, but does it always feel terrifying? This verse draws a powerful comparison between two pivotal moments in Israel's history.
The verse states, "Sinai is now in the sanctuary." This is a profound statement connecting the epic event at Mount Sinai with Mount Zion, where the Temple would stand.
Sinai: A Glorious, Terrible Presence
Mount Sinai was where God met His people, giving them the Law. It was a place of immense glory, thunder, lightning, and smoke – a fearsome display of God's holiness and power (Exodus 19:16-18). It demonstrated God's awesome majesty and His absolute standards.
Zion: God's Dwelling Place
Mount Zion, and specifically the Temple built there, became the focal point of God's presence among His people. The statement "Sinai is now in the sanctuary" means that all the glory, power, and covenantal presence of God that was experienced at Sinai is now found in Zion. However, it's a transformed presence.
A Greater Privilege
Commentators suggest that Zion represents a greater privilege than Sinai. While Sinai brought the Law (which reveals sin and judgment), Zion, through the presence of God and eventually the Messiah, offers grace and redemption. The overwhelming, terrifying glory of Sinai is now housed in the "sanctuary" of Zion, accessible in a way that allows for worship and communion, not just fearful awe.
