The psalmist speaks of rejoicing in vengeance – a tough concept for us today! What does this mean for followers of God?
Not Personal Revenge, but Divine Vindication
The joy described here isn't about personal satisfaction in someone else's pain. Instead, it's a deep relief and affirmation that God's justice is real and active. When we see wickedness that has plagued God's people finally met with divine retribution, it validates our faith and God's character.
- God's Honor Restored: The primary focus is the vindication of God's name and honor. Wickedness that defies Him and harms His people is ultimately overcome.
- Trust in Providence: This rejoicing confirms that God is not absent or indifferent. His providence is real, and He acts to uphold righteousness, even when it seems slow.
- Sorrow for Sin, Joy in Justice: True followers grieve over sin itself and long for the salvation of all. However, when willful rebellion meets God's just judgment after all other avenues have failed, there is a righteous satisfaction in seeing God's holiness upheld.
