The verse highlights that saying "There is no God" isn't just an intellectual disagreement, but a declaration of a corrupt and actively wicked heart, revealing a deep-seated moral decay where no good is found. It emphasizes that this denial of God is less about reason and more about a chosen, destructive path.
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This psalm is a powerful, albeit slightly altered, repetition of Psalm 14, and it starts with a stark declaration about humanity's fallen state. David, inspired by God, observes a deep-seated rebellion against the divine, where people deny God's existence in their hearts and live lives consumed by corruption and wicked deeds, showing no inclination towards goodness. This description sets the stage for God's searching gaze and the subsequent lament for humanity's desperate need for salvation, a theme that echoes throughout the rest of the psalm.
The Bible doesn't just say atheists are wrong; it calls them fools. Why such a strong word for simply not believing in God?
This psalm opens with a stark declaration: 'The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' The Hebrew word for 'fool' here doesn't just mean someone unintelligent; it points to someone morally senseless, someone who deliberately ignores evidence and wisdom.
This isn't about a reasoned philosophical conclusion, but a heart-level denial. It's a choice to shut God out, a decision that affects one's entire way of living. When people reject God, they aren't just questioning theology; they're embracing a path that leads to corruption and moral decay. This rejection is the root of 'abominable iniquity.'
The verse concludes with a sweeping statement: 'there is none who does good.' Is this really true? Does no one ever do anything good?
This verse paints a grim picture of humanity's spiritual state. It's not that people are incapable of performing acts that appear good, but that from God's perspective, no one perfectly fulfills His righteous standard. Our 'good' deeds are often mixed with selfish motives or fall short of divine perfection.
This lack of inherent goodness isn't an excuse for sin, but a diagnosis. It underscores our desperate need for God's intervention. The psalm emphasizes that true goodness doesn't originate from within us; it's a gift from God, made possible through His saving work.
