Imagine telling a billionaire they need your spare change. God, the Creator of everything, poses a similar, rhetorical question to His people. What's He getting at?
The psalmist records God speaking with a tone of utter incredulity: 'Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?'
A God Above Need
God isn't a cosmic tenant who needs us to pay rent with sacrifices. He is the infinite, self-sufficient Creator of the entire universe. Every animal, every mountain, every star belongs to Him. He doesn't hunger, thirst, or lack anything.
The Absurdity of the Thought
To suggest God needs our sacrifices is not just mistaken; it’s absurd. It’s like saying a tiny ant could feed the sun. The commentators rightly point out that even pagan cultures, with their often grosser ideas of the divine, understood that gods didn't literally consume sacrifices for sustenance. The smoke or aroma was what they perceived as reaching the divine realm, not the actual meat and blood.
