Who is truly in control when armies clash? This psalm reminds us that even in defeat, God's hand is at work.
It can be jarring to read the Psalmist's perspective: God is seen as the one causing their defeat. This isn't about blaming God maliciously, but about acknowledging His ultimate sovereignty over all circumstances, even painful ones.
Sovereignty in Calamity
The ancient Israelites understood that God was not just a neutral bystander in their wars. He was the ultimate commander. If they won, it was because God went with them. Therefore, if they lost, it was because God had seemingly turned away or even orchestrated the setback.
A Purpose in Punishment
This perspective doesn't negate human responsibility or the reality of enemy actions. Instead, it frames these events within God's larger plan. The defeats and shame described are interpreted not as random chance, but as a consequence of divine discipline or judgment. The goal, though painful, is ultimately restorative – to bring His people back to Himself. This understanding helps them lament their situation while still holding onto the belief that God is in control, even when His actions seem harsh.
