David isn't just asking to know the exact date of his death, but rather wants to grasp how quickly his life is passing and how little time he truly has. This isn't a morbid curiosity, but a profound plea to truly understand his human limitations so he can live with greater purpose and perspective.
“O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
David has been wrestling with deep inner turmoil, apparently caused by his silence in the face of wicked people. Now, overwhelmed by his suffering and the perceived injustice, he cries out to God, wanting to understand the brevity of life as a way to cope with his current distress. He's not asking for a precise date of death, but a profound realization of life's fleeting nature, hoping it will help him bear his pain and refocus his perspective.
What if you knew exactly when your life would end? Would it change how you live today?
The Psalmist is asking God not for a precise date of death, but for a deep, personal realization of life's brevity. He wants to know his end, not just intellectually, but experientially. This isn't a morbid curiosity; it's a strategic plea for perspective.
Why do we strive so hard for things that ultimately amount to so little?
The Psalmist connects the brevity of life to the concept of 'vanity.' This isn't just about life being short; it's about the emptiness of pursuits that lack eternal significance.
