It's easy to read this verse and just think, "Yep, God made everything." But look closer: the "word" and the "breath of his mouth" aren't just two separate actions, they're two ways of saying the same thing—God's powerful, life-giving speech. This isn't just a command; it's the very expression of His being bringing the vastness of the heavens and their countless stars into existence with effortless power.
By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Psalmist is calling for a new song of praise, reminding everyone that God’s faithfulness and justice are evident in His creation. He grounds this praise in the powerful act of creation, specifically how God brought the heavens and everything in them into existence with effortless command, highlighting God’s supreme authority and power over all things. This cosmic beginning is presented as a foundational truth that should lead all inhabitants of the earth to stand in awe of their Creator.
Imagine speaking something into existence. That's the power we see in this verse!
Psalm 33:6 reveals the incredible ease and power with which God created the universe. It states, 'By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.'
Spoken into Being
This wasn't a process of trial and error, or using pre-existing materials. God's 'word' and 'breath' signify His direct command and will. As verse 9 further emphasizes, 'For he spake, and it was; he commanded, and it stood fast.' This highlights God's absolute authority and the immediate, perfect execution of His creative plan.
Majestic Simplicity
Consider the sheer magnificence of the heavens and all their 'host' – the sun, moon, stars, and perhaps even angels. To bring all this into existence with just a word magnifies God's power infinitely beyond human comprehension. It wasn't an arduous task for Him; it was a simple, powerful declaration.
What does it mean that God created with His 'word' and 'breath'?
Psalm 33:6 uses 'word' and 'breath of his mouth' to point to the very expression of God's being and power in creation.
God's Expressed Will
These terms aren't just random choices. They represent God's thought, His will, and His spoken decree. The 'word' is the articulation of His intention, and the 'breath of his mouth' further emphasizes the life-giving power and essence behind that utterance. It's how God makes His will known and brings it into reality.

Divine Persons at Work
While the verse highlights the power of God's utterance, the broader biblical narrative shows that this creative act involves the distinct persons of the Trinity. The 'Word' is understood by many to refer to Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God (as seen in John 1:1-3 and Hebrews 1:2), and the 'breath' or 'spirit' points to the Holy Spirit, who was active in creation (Genesis 1:2). This shows a unified, yet distinct, divine action in bringing the cosmos into being.
