The verse shifts from the loud, public praise of exulting "in glory" to the intimate, private joy of singing "on their beds." This highlights that true worship isn't just for grand occasions, but a continuous, personal overflow of joy that can even fill our quiet moments of rest.
Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to execute on them the judgment written! This is honor for all his godly ones. Praise the LORD!
English Standard Version (ESV)
This psalm celebrates God's people, the saints, who are called to praise Him with new songs, even in their resting places. It contrasts their current joy and glory with the tears and sorrow they may have experienced before, suggesting a time of newfound peace and security. The verses that follow describe how this joy is linked to God empowering them to bring judgment upon their enemies, highlighting a future triumph and vindication.
The verse calls the godly to rejoice 'in glory.' What kind of glory is this, and why does it inspire such deep joy?
The 'glory' mentioned here isn't just about a future reward or a shining light. It points to the manifest presence of God Himself.
God's Restored Presence
When the psalmist speaks of God's people rejoicing 'in glory,' it signifies a return to a state where God's presence is powerfully felt and experienced among them. After periods of hardship or exile, God's presence is their highest honor and deepest joy.
More Than Just Circumstances
This 'glory' is intrinsically linked to God's faithfulness and the restoration of His favor. It means God is with them, actively working on their behalf, and that His presence fills their lives and their community. This is a joy that transcends temporary circumstances.
Why sing on their beds? Isn't that a time for rest, or perhaps even for worry?
The image of singing 'upon their beds' powerfully contrasts with times of distress and highlights a profound shift brought about by God's deliverance and presence.
From Tears to Triumph
Historically, beds could be places of weeping and sleepless nights filled with anxiety (as seen in other Psalms). But now, the godly can sing aloud upon their beds. This signifies a peace and security so deep that even their rest is filled with praise.
