What Psalm 136:10-15 means

This psalm is a grand retelling of Israel's history, celebrating God's enduring faithfulness. It moves from creation to the Exodus, highlighting God's mighty acts that secured Israel's freedom and inheritance, contrasting His care for His people with the judgment brought upon their oppressors, like the devastating plague on Egypt's firstborn.

Mercy in Judgment

The plague that killed Egypt's firstborn is remembered as an act of God's 'steadfast love.' How can such a devastating event be seen as loving?

This verse highlights a challenging but crucial aspect of God's character: His steadfast love is often demonstrated through judgment, especially when His people are oppressed.

A Covenantal Love

The Hebrew word for "steadfast love" (hesed) isn't just general kindness; it signifies a deep, loyal, and covenantal commitment. God's actions in Egypt, though severe, were a profound act of delivering His chosen people from bondage.

Deliverance Through Destruction

For Israel, the destruction of the firstborn was the final, decisive blow that broke Pharaoh's will and led to their freedom. God's love for His people compelled Him to act, and this act, while costly for the Egyptians, was essential for Israel's liberation and their future as a nation. It was a demonstration of His power to rescue those who were enslaved, even at the expense of their oppressors.

The 'Steadfast Love' Refrain

The phrase 'for his steadfast love endures forever' is repeated throughout this Psalm. What makes this enduring love so central to God's interaction with Israel?

Psalm 136 is structured around a powerful refrain, a constant reminder that God's actions, both fierce and tender, are rooted in His eternal, unchanging love.

A Pattern of Grace

Each verse recounts a significant act of God in Israel's history – from creation to the exodus and wilderness wanderings. The repetition of 'for his steadfast love endures forever' connects these specific events to God's unchanging character. It shows that His love isn't conditional on Israel's performance but is the very foundation of their relationship.
