Why does the Psalmist start with God’s character? It’s more than just a nice thought; it’s the foundation for everything else.
This verse introduces two core attributes of God that are presented as the reasons for giving thanks:
God is Good
This speaks to God's inherent nature – He is perfectly good in Himself. This goodness isn't just a feeling; it's the source of all that is good in the universe. Because God is good, we can trust Him and have confidence in His actions.
His Steadfast Love Endures Forever
This is the heart of the verse and the entire Psalm. The Hebrew word here (often translated as 'mercy,' 'lovingkindness,' or 'steadfast love') describes a deep, covenantal, and unfailing love. It's a love that is loyal, consistent, and permanent. It's not dependent on our performance but on God’s unchanging character and promises.
