The word "now" in this verse isn't about time; it's an emphatic plea, like saying, "Seriously, where is your God?" It highlights the urgency and shame the people feel when their enemies mock their faith precisely because they're in distress, implying God has abandoned them.
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The psalm begins with a humble plea for God's glory, not their own, even in times of distress. This verse then voices a critical question: why should enemies, the surrounding nations, mock God and His people by asking where He is when His people seem helpless or abandoned? This outcry arises when God's people are suffering or have experienced a defeat, prompting unbelievers to question the power and presence of the God they worship.
Ever felt like God is quiet when you desperately need Him? This verse captures that agonizing feeling, but from a communal perspective.
This question, 'Where is their God?', isn't just a casual inquiry. It's loaded with scorn and doubt from the surrounding nations. It comes up when God's people are in deep trouble, suffering defeats or facing overwhelming odds. The enemies look at Israel's distress and taunt them, implying their God is either powerless, unwilling, or simply absent. It's a moment where the reputation of the God of Israel is under attack. The psalmist is asking, 'Why would You allow this situation to unfold in a way that gives the nations reason to mock You and Your promises?' It highlights how the suffering of God's people is directly linked to how God is perceived by the world.
This question about God's whereabouts isn't just about Israel's comfort—it's about God's own honor.
The psalmist isn't just concerned about the people of Israel; their primary worry is God's name and glory. When Israel is in distress, and their God seems absent, the nations will blaspheme Him. The psalmist argues that God's intervention is necessary not just for Israel's sake, but for the sake of His own truth and mercy. God's covenant promises and His character are at stake. If He allows His people to be utterly destroyed or shamed, the nations will conclude that He is weak or untrustworthy. Therefore, the plea isn't just 'Save us,' but implicitly, 'Vindicate Your name!' God's glory is tied to His faithfulness to His people.

When God's people are struggling, the enemies mock. But the psalmist has a powerful counter-argument.
The implied answer to the nations' taunt ('Where is their God?') comes in the very next verse: 'Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases' (Psalm 115:3). This is a profound declaration of God's sovereignty. Unlike the lifeless idols of the nations, which are man-made and powerless, Israel's God is in heaven. This doesn't mean He's distant or uninvolved, but rather that His authority is supreme, His power unlimited, and His actions are guided by His own perfect will. He is not bound by circumstances, fate, or the whims of human enemies. While the nations may see only the present distress, the psalmist reminds himself and the people that the God who reigns in heaven is ultimately in control and capable of acting decisively.
