The phrase "his judgments are in all the earth" isn't just about God's laws, but about His active rule and decisive actions that are seen everywhere. This reminds us that God's justice and governance aren't confined to one place; they are evident in the grand sweep of history and in every corner of creation.
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This Psalm is a powerful call to remember and praise God's faithfulness, particularly through recounting Israel's history. It begins by urging thanksgiving and acknowledging God's mighty deeds among the nations. Verse 7 then serves as a foundational declaration, asserting God's unique identity as "Jehovah our God" and the universal reach of His authority and justice, setting the stage for the historical narrative that follows.
The verse starts by declaring who God is. What does His name, 'the LORD,' truly signify for us today?
When the Psalmist exclaims, 'He is the LORD our God,' he's not just stating a fact; he's declaring a deep relationship. 'The LORD' (Yahweh) points to God's self-existent, eternal nature – the God who is, the God who made promises and will always fulfill them. But it doesn't stop there. He immediately adds, 'our God.' This means this eternal, unchangeable God has chosen to be in a special covenant relationship with us, making Him 'our portion.' This isn't a distant deity; it's a personal God who has taken us as His own people.
The verse concludes with a powerful statement about God's 'judgments.' What does this mean, and why is it cause for praise?
The phrase 'his judgments are in all the earth' can be understood in a couple of significant ways. It can refer to God's righteous laws and decrees that govern the entire world. Even though not everyone obeys them, they are His standards that apply universally. More immediately, in the context of Psalms 105, it likely refers to God's actions – His 'judgments' or acts of justice. Think of His powerful interventions, like the plagues on Egypt or His deliverance of Israel. These weren't just local events; they demonstrated His sovereign power and justice to all nations, proving that He is the one true God ruling over everything. These acts, whether laws or interventions, reveal His holiness and justice on a global scale.
