The verse doesn't just state God is great; it emphasizes that He clothed himself with splendor and majesty, presenting His greatness as a deliberate, majestic "outfit" revealed through His creation. This imagery highlights that God's glory isn't just an abstract quality but something actively displayed for us to behold.
Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This psalm begins with a powerful call for the psalmist's own soul to praise God, immediately emphasizing God's immense greatness and the splendor that veils Him. It sets the stage for a reflection on God's creative power and majestic rule over the heavens and the earth, presenting creation itself as the magnificent robe God wears. This foundational declaration of God's glory in His very being and outward appearance is what the rest of the psalm will explore through the wonders of the natural world.
The Bible doesn't just suggest praise; it often commands it. But what does it mean to 'bless the LORD' with your very soul?
The opening of Psalm 104 is a powerful call to action directed inward. The psalmist commands his own soul, 'Bless the LORD!' This isn't a passive feeling but an active, intentional engagement of our entire being in acknowledging God's worth. It's a deliberate choice to recognize His supreme goodness and sovereignty. The phrase 'O LORD my God' personalizes this command, reminding us that our praise is rooted in our unique relationship with Him, as our personal God.
How do you begin to describe the indescribable? This psalm starts by declaring God's supreme, awesome greatness.
The psalmist immediately exclaims, 'you are very great!' This isn't just stating a fact; it's an awe-filled recognition of God's infinite, incomparable nature. His greatness isn't limited to His power, but encompasses His very essence. This vastness is further depicted by the imagery of God being 'clothed with splendor and majesty.' This metaphor suggests that His glory and regal authority are not merely abstract qualities, but are so profound that they can be likened to the magnificent robes of a king. His splendor is dazzling, His majesty is awe-inspiring, revealing His supreme rule over all creation.
