Ever feel like you're barely getting by, or that God should be much angrier with you? This verse offers a profound perspective on divine justice.
Justice Held Back
The psalmist declares that God 'does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.' This isn't to say God ignores sin – far from it. He does discipline and correct His people. But His correction is tempered with mercy.
Think of a parent justly frustrated with a child's repeated misbehavior. While the parent might administer discipline, they don't disown the child or inflict punishment that is truly more than the offense warrants, especially when considering the child's capacity and the parent's love.
Similarly, God's judgment is not the final word for those who fear Him. While His justice is perfect and His righteousness demands accountability, His infinite love and the redemptive work of Christ mean His response to our sin is always less severe than we truly deserve. He holds back the full weight of His wrath.
