What's easy to miss here is that "loud" (clamorous) isn't just about volume, but about a desperate, intrusive insistence. She's not just noisy; she's aggressively seeking attention because, deep down, she lacks any real substance or truth to offer.
The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse introduces a stark contrast to the wisdom previously described, personifying "Folly" as a loud and seductive woman. Following Wisdom's gracious invitation, Folly also calls out from her house, but her approach is aggressive and ignorant. This "woman of folly" represents not just abstract vice, but the specific allure of reckless sin and destructive choices, which ultimately lead to ruin for those who listen.
Why does 'Folly' draw attention to herself with such noise? It's not just about being loud; it's a deliberate, deceptive tactic.
The woman Folly is described as 'clamorous,' meaning loud and noisy. This isn't just random shouting; it's a strategic way to get noticed. Think of it like someone trying to sell you something with aggressive sales tactics, drowning out any doubts you might have with sheer volume. This loudness is meant to be alluring, to draw unsuspecting people in before they can think too clearly. The commentary highlights that this 'clamor' is a way to 'move persons by her persuasions.' It's designed to overwhelm your senses and bypass your reason, making her seductive promises sound more appealing than they are.
She's loud, she's seductive, but what's really going on behind that facade? The verse gives us a shocking answer.
The most striking part of Folly's description is that she 'knows nothing.' This isn't just a lack of education; it's a profound ignorance of what truly matters. She may be cunning in her schemes, but she's fundamentally ignorant of truth, of God, and of the devastating consequences of her lifestyle. The commentaries emphasize that she knows 'nothing aright' or 'nothing that is good.' Her perceived 'wisdom' is shallow, focused on immediate gratification and manipulation, blinding her (and those who follow her) to lasting value and eternal reality. This ignorance is not passive; it's an active state that leads to destruction.
