Proverbs 6:28-32

This isn't just about getting burned; it's about the inevitable consequence of setting your feet on what's already ignited. The imagery highlights that the "hot coals" of temptation are already fully ablaze, making any contact—even a brief one—guaranteed to cause damage.
Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This proverb comes in the middle of a strong warning against adultery. Solomon uses a series of rhetorical questions, like walking on hot coals, to illustrate the inevitable negative consequences of sin. He's just shown how a man can be consumed by lust, and these questions hammer home the point that such actions will always lead to destruction and ruin, leaving deep scars.
Ever tried to touch something you know is dangerously hot and thought you'd be okay? The Bible uses a vivid image to expose the folly of playing with sin.
This verse uses a powerful rhetorical question to illustrate the inevitable and damaging consequences of sin, particularly sexual immorality, as discussed in the surrounding verses. Just as it's impossible to walk on burning coals without getting burned, it's impossible to engage in sinful actions without suffering harm.
The Nature of the "Burn"
Sin often doesn't look like a wildfire; it creeps in disguised. But the Bible warns us that even a seemingly small step onto 'hot coals' is incredibly dangerous.
The imagery of "hot coals" suggests not just the heat of sin but also the potential for it to be hidden or underestimated. Like coals covered in deceptive ashes, sin can appear less threatening than it truly is.
