The verse highlights that true knowledge of God's cosmic power and divine nature isn't learned through human exploration, but is inherent to God alone. The question about "his son's name" isn't about discovering a human lineage, but points to a profound divine relationship, hinting at a revelation yet to come that would unveil God's unique Son.
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!
English Standard Version (ESV)
Agur, the author of this section, begins by confessing his own ignorance and limitations, acknowledging he's not a prophet or possessed of divine wisdom. He then poses a series of rhetorical questions, drawing on imagery of creation's power and mystery, to highlight the unfathomable nature and authority of the Creator, setting the stage to contrast this divine knowledge with human limitations. These questions about controlling the elements and establishing the earth directly challenge any human claim to ultimate understanding or authority, leading into his desire to know God's name and the name of His Son.
