To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The book of Proverbs opens by stating its purpose: to impart practical wisdom and divine insight, helping readers discern truth from error. These opening verses aren't just a title but an explanation of the entire book's design, which aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of God's ways for both the young and the already wise. The verses establish that this wisdom isn't merely intellectual knowledge but a disciplined way of living that leads to salvation.
We often hear about 'wisdom,' but what does that really mean in the Bible? Proverbs isn't just about being clever; it's about a profound way of living.
The book of Proverbs begins by declaring its purpose: 'To know wisdom and instruction.' The Hebrew word for wisdom here, 'chochmah,' points to more than just academic knowledge. It signifies a deep, practical understanding of how life works, rooted in God's order. It’s about having a solid foundation for your decisions, a kind of 'heavenly teaching' that guides your entire life. This wisdom isn't just about knowing things; it's about knowing God and living in alignment with His truth. It's the skill to navigate life's complexities with divine insight.
The verse doesn't just mention 'wisdom'; it pairs it with 'instruction.' What's the relationship between these two vital concepts?
The Hebrew word for 'instruction,' 'musar,' is often translated as discipline, correction, or training. It’s not always easy or pleasant, but it's essential for growth. Think of it like a coach guiding an athlete – there's teaching, but also correction and practice to build skill and character. This 'musar' is what helps us internalize wisdom, moving it from something we intellectually grasp to something that shapes our actions. It’s the process that refines our understanding and corrects our course, making us not just knowledgeable, but truly discerning.

Proverbs speaks of 'words of understanding.' How does this connect to truly knowing wisdom and instruction?
The final phrase, 'to understand words of understanding,' emphasizes discernment. The root word here relates to separating or distinguishing. It means having the capacity to tell the difference between what is true and what is false, what is good and what is harmful. It’s not just about receiving information, but about having your mind sharpened to evaluate it. This kind of understanding allows you to process the wisdom and instruction you receive, making wise choices and rejecting error. It’s the ability to hear God’s voice amidst the noise of the world.
