The alluring words aren't just about violence, but about a calculated, secretive ambush. They emphasize not only shedding blood but "hiding" themselves and their snares, suggesting a desire for both success and impunity in their wicked deeds. This reveals their cunning intent to trap the unsuspecting, highlighting the deceptive nature of their invitation.
If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse”— my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author of Proverbs is painting a vivid picture of the dangers facing the young and impressionable. Sinners are actively recruiting, inviting the listener to join them in criminal enterprises, starting with violent robbery where blood will be shed. This appeal is presented as a secret ambush against innocent, unsuspecting people, a plan executed for no reason other than to seize their possessions.
Ever felt lured into something you knew wasn't right? Sin doesn't usually show its true face immediately. It disguises itself with appealing promises.
Sin's Sneaky Strategy
The father in Proverbs is warning his son, and us, about the dangerous way sinners try to recruit new members. They don't say, 'Let's go rob and murder!' Instead, they use softer language to hide their true intentions.
Why would anyone hurt an innocent person? The reason given for this evil deed is perhaps the most chilling part.
The Malice of Aimless Harm
