Philippians 2:3-7
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
The verse doesn't just tell us to avoid pride; it reveals that "strife" and "vain glory" are driven by a fundamental miscalculation: we're too busy looking at ourselves to truly see others. The surprising truth is that humility isn't about thinking less of ourselves, but about seeing others as more significant, which naturally shifts our focus away from selfish ambition.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is urging the Philippian believers to unity and humility, directly addressing internal divisions and self-serving attitudes that were likely causing friction within the church. He builds on his previous call for them to be "of the same mind," now detailing how to achieve that unity: by rejecting selfish ambition and pride, and actively valuing others above themselves. This practical advice sets the stage for him to introduce the ultimate example of this selflessness: Jesus Christ himself in the following verses.
Ever feel like you're competing, even in ministry or church life? Paul warns against this subtle trap.
Paul starts by telling us what not to do. He uses two powerful words: 'strife' (or 'faction') and 'vainglory'.
Strife and Faction
This isn't just about outright arguments. It's a deeper, more insidious drive to compete, to win at all costs, and to push your own agenda. Think of it as a rivalry where you're constantly trying to get ahead of others, perhaps even within the church community. It’s about asserting your own importance above others.
Vainglory (Empty Praise)
This is the desire for empty praise, seeking recognition and applause for yourself. It’s about puffing yourself up, wanting to be seen and admired. This motive is hollow, like an empty vessel – it looks good but has no real substance. Paul wants us to avoid doing anything driven by these self-centered impulses.
What's the antidote to selfish ambition? It’s a radical reorientation of how we see ourselves and others.
Paul doesn't leave us in the negativity. He offers the solution: 'but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.' This is the heart of the Christian ethic, directly opposing the world's values.

The Essence of Humility
The Greek word for humility here isn't about self-deprecation or thinking you're worthless. It's about having a realistic, God-centered view of yourself and others. It means recognizing your dependence on God and, in light of that, valuing others genuinely.
Counting Others More Significant
This is the practical outworking of humility. It means actively looking for the good in others, recognizing their gifts and standing, and giving them the benefit of the doubt. It's not about denying your own value, but about prioritizing the value and well-being of others. This practice counteracts the tendency to constantly compare ourselves and seek our own advantage.
