Ever feel the urge to win at all costs, or to make sure everyone knows how great you are? Paul warns against these very things.
Paul kicks off this section by warning against two core motivations that are antithetical to Christian unity:
Strife (or Faction)
This isn't just about a simple disagreement. It's a spirit of contention, rivalry, and a desire to get ahead by outmaneuvering others. Think of political infighting or even just office gossip where people jockey for position. This spirit seeks its own advantage, often at the expense of others or the common good.
Vain Glory (or Empty Pride)
This is the desire for empty praise and recognition. It’s about seeking applause, wanting to be noticed, and making yourself the center of attention. It’s the internal drive to be “uppermost” or “foremost,” not for God’s glory, but for your own ego. It’s a hollow pursuit because the glory is ultimately empty and fleeting.
Paul insists that nothing should be done with these motivations. They poison relationships and undermine the very unity Christ calls us to.
