Philemon 1:10-17

What does Philemon 1:10-17 mean?

Paul doesn't just mention Onesimus's name; he deliberately delays it until after calling him "my son" and "my child," softening Philemon's heart with affection before presenting the potentially difficult name. This strategic placement highlights Paul's gentle approach, framing Onesimus not as a runaway slave, but as a cherished spiritual offspring born from Paul's ministry even in hardship.

I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment. (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel, but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own accord. For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Philemon 1:10-17 means

Paul is writing to Philemon, a beloved co-worker and slave owner, to appeal for mercy on behalf of Onesimus. Onesimus, Philemon's runaway slave, has encountered Paul in Rome, and Paul has led him to faith in Christ. Now, Paul is sending Onesimus back to Philemon, not just as a former slave, but as a brother in Christ, asking Philemon to receive him with forgiveness and love.

Spiritual Fatherhood in Imprisonment

Paul calls Onesimus his 'son,' but not in the usual sense. What does this unique spiritual relationship mean, especially born from the difficult circumstances of Paul's imprisonment?

Paul uses the term "my son" (Greek: τέκνον, teknon) for Onesimus, signifying a deep spiritual connection. This isn't biological fatherhood, but the intimate bond forged when Paul led Onesimus to faith in Christ.

The Ministry of Spiritual Birth

Paul describes this as "whom I have begotten in my bonds." This points to the act of spiritual regeneration through the Gospel. Even while imprisoned, Paul's ministry continued, proving that God's Word is not bound. It highlights that spiritual birth is a divine work, initiated by God but often facilitated through the faithful ministry of individuals like Paul.

This "fatherhood" implies a profound responsibility and affection, much like a biological parent. Paul felt deeply for Onesimus, viewing his conversion as a personal spiritual achievement and Onesimus as a cherished member of his spiritual family.

Strategic Use of a Name and a Title

Paul intentionally delays mentioning Onesimus's name. Why this literary and relational strategy, and how does calling him 'son' disarm Philemon?

Paul employs remarkable tact in presenting his appeal. He first establishes his fatherly affection for Onesimus, calling him "my son," before even revealing the runaway slave's name.

Building Goodwill First

By using the endearing term "my son," Paul aims to soften Philemon's heart and pre-dispose him to hear the request favorably. The name "Onesimus" itself, meaning "useful" or "profitable," would have been a painful reminder of Onesimus's past failures and his flight, making him seem anything but profitable to his master. Paul strategically places the name at the end of the clause, after establishing the profound spiritual relationship and the context of its formation.
