This simple opening, "The LORD spoke to Moses," signals a divine instruction that’s directly tied to the meticulously ordered camp described just before. It’s not just a random law, but a command to maintain the sacredness of God's dwelling place among His people, highlighting that holiness isn't optional when God is present.
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp everyone who is leprous or has a discharge and everyone who is unclean through contact with the dead. You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell.” And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so the people of Israel did.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After the census and arrangements for the camp's order, God now speaks to Moses to establish laws for maintaining holiness within their community. These instructions concern the removal of those with uncleanness, emphasizing that the sanctity of the camp is vital because God's presence dwells there. This sets the stage for further laws regarding restitution, jealousy, and atonement.
Every word from God carries weight, but when it's a direct instruction to Moses, it's a game-changer. This isn't casual conversation; it's revelation.
The very first verse of chapter 5, 'The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,' is more than just a narrative connector. It signifies a direct, authoritative communication from God to His chosen leader.
A Voice of Authority
God's presence is a privilege, but it demands a response – especially when it comes to staying clean. Why was purity so non-negotiable for Israel?
The context immediately following this verse (Numbers 5:1-4) emphasizes the removal of unclean persons from the Israelite camp. This isn't arbitrary; it's deeply connected to God's presence among His people.
