Numbers 4:15-16

What does Numbers 4:15-16 mean?

The verse emphasizes that even after Aaron and his sons meticulously covered the sacred items, the Kohathites were forbidden to touch them directly. This highlights that their role wasn't just about physical transport, but a profound responsibility to respect the holiness of what they carried, a holiness that remained even when hidden from view.

And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry these, but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things of the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry. “And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil, with the oversight of the whole tabernacle and all that is in it, of the sanctuary and its vessels.”

What Numbers 4:15-16 means

This passage is part of a detailed logistical plan for the Israelites as they journey through the wilderness, specifically how the Tabernacle and its sacred objects are to be packed and moved. After Aaron and his sons, the priests, have carefully covered all the holy items, the Kohathite division of the Levites are assigned the task of carrying these precious, sacred things, but with a strict prohibition against touching them directly. This instruction emphasizes the immense holiness and the potential danger associated with proximity to God’s presence, a theme that will later be tragically illustrated.

The Sacredness of Holy Things

Why was touching the sacred objects so deadly for the Kohathites?

The text here emphasizes an intense reverence for the items associated with God's presence. These weren't just religious artifacts; they were symbols and conduits of God's holiness. The Kohathites, who were tasked with carrying these items, were given a strict prohibition: 'they must not touch the holy things, lest they die.' This wasn't arbitrary; it underscored that God's holiness is not to be trifled with. Even an unintentional contact could have fatal consequences, showing the profound separation between God's sacred presence and sinful humanity.

This strictness is further highlighted by the precedent set later. When the Ark of the Covenant was moved, Uzzah reached out to steady it and died instantly (2 Samuel 6:6-7). This event, much like the command in Numbers, serves as a stark reminder of the awesome holiness of God and the serious danger of approaching Him or His sacred things with casualness or impurity.

Order in Movement, Reverence in Service

What does the careful procedure for moving the Tabernacle teach us about serving God?

The passage meticulously outlines the process for dismantling and moving the Tabernacle. First, Aaron and his sons, the priests, were responsible for covering all the sacred furnishings. This act of covering was not merely practical; it was a ritualistic act of securing the holiness of the items before they could be moved. Only after this covering was complete could the Kohathites, another division of the Levites, come to carry the items.
