Numbers 35:16-21

What does Numbers 35:16-21 mean?

The specific mention of an "instrument of iron" isn't just about the tool; it signifies a deliberate, forceful act, leaving no room for doubt that the intention was to cause fatal harm, thus distinguishing it from an accidental blow and qualifying it as murder.

“But if he struck him down with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. And if he struck him down with a stone tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. Or if he struck him down with a wooden tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death. The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. And if he pushed him out of hatred or hurled something at him, lying in wait, so that he died, or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Numbers 35:16-21 means

This passage is detailing specific scenarios of killing to distinguish between intentional murder and accidental manslaughter, determining whether the offender qualifies for the protection of a city of refuge. It follows previous instructions about the cities of refuge and lays out a series of examples, like being struck with an iron object, to clarify the legal consequences and ensure justice is served appropriately. The subsequent verses will continue to explore other situations and the required legal procedures to differentiate these cases.

The Weight of the Instrument

Why does the text specifically mention an 'instrument of iron'? Does the tool used in a killing matter?

The mention of an "instrument of iron" in verse 16 isn't just about the material. It signifies a weapon or tool that clearly indicates intent to harm or kill. Unlike accidental falls or unintended pushes, striking someone with something like a hammer, axe, or sword leaves little room to argue it was unintentional.

Intent Over Impact: While the result is death, the means used suggests a deliberate act. The commentators point out that using such tools implies a readiness to inflict serious injury or death, moving beyond mere accident.
Distinguishing Accidents: This specific wording helps differentiate deliberate murder from unintentional manslaughter, which the broader context of cities of refuge addresses. The emphasis on the instrument highlights that the manner of the act is a clue to the perpetrator's state of mind.

Murderer: A Definitive Label

This verse issues a stark declaration: 'he is a murderer.' What makes this label so final?

In this passage, the label 'murderer' is not a suggestion or a possibility; it's a definitive pronouncement tied directly to the act described. God is clear: striking someone with an instrument of iron, resulting in death, makes the perpetrator a murderer in the eyes of the law and before God.
