“This shall be your northern border: from the Great Sea you shall draw a line to Mount Hor. From Mount Hor you shall draw a line to Lebo-hamath, and the limit of the border shall be at Zedad. Then the border shall extend to Ziphron, and its limit shall be at Hazar-enan. This shall be your northern border.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of God's detailed instructions to Moses for dividing the promised land among the tribes of Israel. After describing the southern and western borders, the text now specifies the northern boundary, beginning at the Mediterranean Sea and extending inland to a mountain called "Hor." This mountain is distinct from the one where Aaron died and is likely a significant peak within the Lebanon range, serving as a key marker for the land's northern limit.

Divine Precision

A Unique Identity
These borders served to set Israel apart. This land was to be their home, a place where they would live under God's rule and reflect His character to the surrounding nations. It was a tangible sign of their covenant relationship with Him.

The specific 'Mount Hor' mentioned for the northern border in Numbers 34:7 is a point of discussion among scholars. It's crucial to understand that it's not the same Mount Hor where Aaron passed away, which is located in the south near Edom.
A Northern Landmark

Commentaries suggest this northern Mount Hor was likely a prominent peak in the Lebanon range, possibly Hermon or a related summit. Its significance lay in its distinctiveness as a landmark visible from the Great Sea, serving as a clear starting point for the northern boundary.
Symbolic Significance
While its exact location might be debated, the purpose of naming it is clear: to establish a tangible, visible marker for the extent of God's gift.
