Who was Machir, and did he actually receive this land?
The verse states Moses gave Gilead to Machir. However, the historical context strongly suggests this wasn't to Machir himself. Given that most of the generation who left Egypt perished in the wilderness (Numbers 32:11), and Machir was a figure from the generation before, it's highly probable he had already passed away. The land was instead granted to his descendants, the 'family or posterity of Machir.' This practice of assigning land to a father's name, even after his death, was common in ancient Israel. It ensured that the legacy and inheritance of a patriarch like Machir would continue through his lineage, solidifying their place within the promised land.
Think of it like this: when we talk about 'the founding fathers' of a nation, we're not usually referring to them personally building every road or policy today, but to the enduring legacy they established for future generations.
