Numbers 32:33-42

What does Numbers 32:33-42 mean?

This verse reveals that Moses didn't just give land to Reuben and Gad, but he also granted the conquered kingdoms of Sihon and Og to half of Manasseh’s tribe. This implies a division within Manasseh, with one part settling east of the Jordan, a decision likely influenced by their own successful conquests and pastoral needs, rather than a formal request like Reuben and Gad.

And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep. And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair. And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

What Numbers 32:33-42 means

After the tribes of Reuben and Gad requested to settle east of the Jordan River due to their abundant livestock, Moses initially rebuked them for potentially abandoning their brethren in the conquest of the Promised Land. Following their pledge to fight alongside the other tribes until Canaan was fully subdued, Moses agreed to grant them the lands previously conquered from Sihon and Og, along with territories for half of Manasseh's tribe, who had also acquired land through their own military efforts.

The Land of Giants' Kingdoms

Ever wonder what it was like to inherit land that wasn't exactly empty? Moses gives a specific, powerful description of the territory granted here.

Moses doesn't just give them land; he hands over entire kingdoms.

From Amorite Rule to Israelite Inheritance

Kingdoms of Sihon and Og: This wasn't just empty territory; it was the established domains of powerful Amorite kings. Sihon ruled over much of what would become the lands of Reuben and Gad, while Og controlled Bashan, later assigned to the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Cities and Territories: The grant includes not only the land but also the cities and their surrounding territories. This signifies a complete transfer of dominion, including existing infrastructure and settlements.
A Divine Displacement: God had already judged and dispossessed the inhabitants of this land, clearing the way for Israel. This act demonstrates God's power to remove oppressive rulers and establish His people.

The Unexpected Half of Manasseh

Why is half of Manasseh mentioned here, when the initial request seems to come only from Reuben and Gad? This detail reveals a deeper story of conquest and provision.

The inclusion of the half-tribe of Manasseh isn't arbitrary; it’s tied to their own military achievements.
