English Standard Version (ESV)
After the Israelites conquered the lands east of the Jordan River, the tribes of Gad and Reuben, who had large herds, requested to settle there permanently, instead of crossing into the Promised Land. Moses initially rebuked them for this, reminding them of their ancestors' disobedience and the consequences, but eventually agreed on the condition that they would fight alongside their brothers until the land of Canaan was fully subdued. This verse records Moses granting these territories, the kingdoms of Sihon and Og, to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and a portion of Manasseh, who had also fought and conquered parts of this region.
