This verse highlights a subtle but significant point: it's not just land that's being given, but the kingdoms of Sihon and Og. This means the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh are inheriting not just territory, but the established rule and authority of the defeated Amorite kings, a profound expansion of their new national identity.
And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After the Israelites conquered the Amorite kingdoms east of the Jordan River, the tribes of Gad and Reuben requested to settle there due to their large herds. Moses initially rebuked them for potentially weakening the army's resolve to conquer the Promised Land, but eventually agreed on the condition that they fight alongside their brothers until all of Israel inherited their portions. This verse marks the official granting of these conquered lands, including the territories of Sihon and Og, to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and a portion of Manasseh, who had also participated in the conquest.
Why were these specific lands on the east side of the Jordan given to these tribes?
The lands given to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh were not simply empty territory. They were the conquered kingdoms of Sihon and Og, the Amorite kings.
What was the underlying tension between settling early and fulfilling the promise to the whole nation?
The request by Reuben and Gad to settle east of the Jordan brought a critical issue to the forefront: the nature of their inheritance and their commitment to the covenant promises for all of Israel.
