Numbers 32:20-24

What does Numbers 32:20-24 mean?

Moses emphasizes that their military service is "before the Lord," not just before the rest of Israel. This highlights that their commitment is a sacred duty, happening directly in God's sight and service, not merely a contribution to a human effort. It underscores the spiritual significance of their participation in the conquest of the Promised Land.

So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”

What Numbers 32:20-24 means

The tribes of Reuben and Gad, having found a fertile pastureland east of the Jordan, propose to Moses that they settle there, rather than crossing into the promised land with the rest of Israel. Moses initially rebukes them sternly, reminding them of their fathers' disobedience and the consequences of turning away from God, but ultimately agrees to their request on the condition that their warriors will first fight alongside the rest of the Israelites to conquer Canaan. This verse marks Moses' conditional acceptance of their proposal, emphasizing their commitment to go armed into battle.

Marching Before the Lord

What does it mean to go 'before the Lord' into battle? It's more than just a physical location; it speaks to the heart of Israel's sacred duty.

Moses' words, 'if you will go armed before the Lord to war,' carry a powerful theological weight. The scholars point out that 'before the Lord' likely refers to going in proximity to the Ark of the Covenant, the tangible symbol of God's presence. This wasn't just any military expedition; it was a holy war, undertaken with God at the forefront.

This phrasing highlights a crucial aspect of Israel's identity: their battles were not just for land or resources, but as an extension of God's own campaign to fulfill His promises. When Reuben and Gad agreed to go 'armed before the Lord,' they were pledging to march as a vanguard, a sacred duty that set the tone for the entire nation's commitment to God's will. It underscores that even seemingly practical decisions, like settling land, were intrinsically linked to their spiritual calling and covenant obligations.

The Condition for Inheritance

Moses' response isn't just a command; it’s a conditional agreement that ties their settlement to their service. What's the underlying principle?

Moses’ reply to the tribes of Reuben and Gad is framed as a serious conditional agreement. He says, 'If you will do this thing... then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession.'

This isn't merely a bureaucratic formality; it’s about maintaining the integrity of Israel's covenant and their promised inheritance. Their desire for land east of the Jordan was understandable, but it couldn't come at the expense of their commitment to conquering the land west of the Jordan.
