When Moses says they will go "before the LORD for the war," it’s not just about fighting in God's name, but a very specific reference to marching ahead of the Ark of the Covenant. This highlights the tribes' commitment to being the vanguard, not just for Israel, but as a direct escort of God's very presence as they went into battle.
So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The tribes of Reuben and Gad have requested to settle on the east side of the Jordan River, a fertile land they found suitable for their large herds. Moses, initially concerned this would set a dangerous precedent and weaken Israel's resolve to conquer the Promised Land, now lays out the conditions for their request to be granted. They must first send their fighting men across the Jordan to help the rest of the tribes subdue the land before they can return to claim their own inheritance.
When the tribes of Reuben and Gad wanted to settle east of the Jordan, Moses had a condition. It wasn't just about fighting; it was about how they fought.
Moses' response to Reuben and Gad hinges on the phrase “before the LORD.” This wasn't just a physical location, but a spiritual posture.
God's Presence in Battle
Reuben and Gad wanted a prime piece of real estate. Moses saw their request as a potential breach of faith. What's the connection?
Moses’ stern response isn't just about logistics; it’s about the integrity of Israel's covenant with God.
