Numbers 32:16-27

What does Numbers 32:16-27 mean?

The tribes aren't just asking to build new homes; they're proposing to rebuild and fortify existing cities, making them secure for their families. This subtle distinction reveals they're not looking to abandon their brethren but to establish a safe haven that will allow them to fulfill their promise of fighting alongside them.

Then they came near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.” So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.” And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders.”

What Numbers 32:16-27 means

The tribes of Reuben and Gad, having found a fertile region east of the Jordan River suitable for their vast herds, approach Moses with a proposal. They want to settle this land, building places for their livestock and families, while their fighting men pledge to join the rest of the Israelites in conquering Canaan. This request sparks a tense negotiation with Moses, who initially fears their request signifies a withdrawal from their commitment to the Israelite cause.

The Allure of the Easy Life

The tribes of Gad and Reuben saw a good thing – a land perfect for their massive herds. But was their desire for comfort a detour from God's path?

These tribes looked at the fertile lands east of the Jordan, lands of Jazer and Gilead, and saw an ideal place for their livestock. It was a land 'for cattle.' Their immediate thought was to secure this comfortable settlement for themselves and their families. This desire for ease and security, while understandable, presented a potential conflict with God's plan for His people. The entire nation was destined for the land of Canaan, a unified inheritance. Their focus on immediate personal gain, however appealing, risked them isolating themselves and neglecting their commitment to the rest of Israel's conquest.

From Request to Covenant

Their initial request wasn't just a casual ask; it sparked a crucial negotiation that led to a binding agreement.

The interaction between Moses and the tribes of Gad and Reuben wasn't just a simple 'yes' or 'no.' It became a negotiation that solidified into a solemn covenant. The tribes first proposed their settlement, and Moses, after initial sternness, laid out conditions. Their response, 'Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth,' wasn't just agreement, but a commitment. They vowed to cross over armed and fight with their brethren until the land of Canaan was subdued. Moses, in turn, secured their possession of Gilead, but with the explicit understanding that their commitment to the war effort was the condition. This shows how God works through human negotiation to uphold His will and establish clear responsibilities.
