And the guard duty of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting, the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords—all the service connected with these.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following God's detailed instructions for the Tabernacle, this passage outlines the specific responsibilities assigned to the Gershonite clan of the Levites. Their duty involved caring for the fabric components of the Tent of Meeting, including its inner curtains, the outer covering, and the screen for its entrance, ensuring these vital parts were maintained and transported as the Israelites journeyed. This division of labor highlights the organized and sacred nature of Israel's worship and migration, with each family playing a crucial role in God's presence among His people.
Ever wondered about the different layers of the Tabernacle? This verse breaks down a crucial distinction that reveals its intricate design and the specific duties assigned.
The verse mentions 'the tabernacle, and the tent, the covering thereof'. It might sound like repetition, but scholars point out a key difference:
This wasn't just about building a tent; it was about creating a sacred dwelling with multiple protective layers, each with a purpose. The Gershonites were responsible for these fabric elements, distinct from the wooden frame and poles carried by another group.
Every sacred space has an entrance. Who made sure that entrance was properly set up and maintained? This verse points to a specific, yet often overlooked, part of their duty.

This hanging served a critical role:
Their responsibility for this screen meant they were stewards of the very threshold of God's dwelling place among His people. It highlights that even the 'doorway' to God's presence was a sacred trust.
