The verse isn't just listing names; it's establishing the foundational structure of the entire Levitical service. These three sons—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—are the patriarchal roots from which all the Levitical divisions and their specific responsibilities for the Tabernacle would eventually spring.
And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari. And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their clans: Libni and Shimei. And the sons of Kohath by their clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. And the sons of Merari by their clans: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites, by their fathers’ houses. To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these were the clans of the Gershonites.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Lord is directing Moses to take a census of the Levites, the tribe set apart to serve Him. This chapter details the three main ancestral lines of Levi – Gershon, Kohath, and Merari – and their appointed roles in caring for the Tabernacle, highlighting their unique service to God. This enumeration happens in the wilderness of Sinai, marking a crucial organizational phase for Israel as they prepare to journey.
Why does the Bible start listing genealogies here, and what makes Levi's family so special?
This isn't just a dry family tree; it's the foundational statement for the Levitical priesthood. In a time when every Israelite tribe was defined by land and military service, Levi was set apart. Their 'inheritance' wasn't territory, but service to God and the community.
A Tribe Apart
Numbers 3 is the census of the Levites, but it's framed by their unique role. They were chosen 'instead of all the firstborn' (Numbers 3:12-13). This substitution wasn't arbitrary; it was God's gracious choice, a testament to His ownership of all Israel. This foundational naming of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari sets the stage for how this distinct tribe would fulfill its sacred duty.
These three names might seem simple, but they represent the entire structure of God's chosen servants.
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari are more than just names; they are the patriarchs of the three major divisions of the Levites. Each line would eventually have specific responsibilities within the Tabernacle and later the Temple.
