This passage might seem like just a list of names, but it highlights something crucial about inheritance. While the entire census is about who gets land, this specific family is listed only to introduce the daughters, subtly signaling their unique claim to their father's portion in a patriarchal society. It's the quiet introduction to a legal shift that would recognize women's rights to ancestral property.
Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These are the clans of Manasseh, and those listed were 52,700. These are the sons of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the clan of the Becherites; of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites. And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the clan of the Eranites.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following a devastating plague that had thinned the Israelite ranks, God commands Moses and Eleazar to take a new census of the people. This census, presented in detail through verses listing the families and their numbers, serves as a crucial count before the tribes are assigned their inheritance in the Promised Land, marking a significant moment as the new generation prepares to enter Canaan. In the midst of this detailed enumeration, the text highlights Zelophehad's family, noting his lack of sons and introducing his five daughters, a detail that will prove to be of great importance in the following narratives concerning inheritance laws.
In a world that often overlooks women, God's people faced a unique inheritance challenge. This story shows how God's law can adapt to ensure fairness for everyone.
The census in Numbers chapter 26 is taken to determine land inheritance in the Promised Land. Traditionally, land passed through the male line. However, when Zelophehad dies with no sons, his daughters step forward. This situation highlights a crucial moment where tradition met divine instruction. The daughters of Zelophehad, Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah, claimed their father's right to an inheritance, a right that would have been lost without their initiative and God's subsequent intervention. Their courage paved the way for a significant legal and social shift, ensuring that a family's name and property wouldn't vanish simply because there were no male heirs.
Generations passed, plagues struck, and rebellions echoed through the desert. Yet, God's promises remained steadfast, even through unexpected turns.
The census in Numbers 26 occurs after a devastating plague and nearly 40 years in the wilderness. Many of the original generation who left Egypt had died. It's remarkable that the total number of Israelites is nearly the same as the first census taken at Sinai (Numbers 1). This demonstrates God's incredible faithfulness in preserving and multiplying His people, fulfilling His promise to Abraham to make his descendants numerous like the stars of the sky, even amidst judgment and loss. The inclusion of Zelophehad's daughters in the inheritance rolls, despite their gender, is another testament to God's enduring faithfulness. He provides for His people, ensuring their legacy and inheritance, adapting His established order to maintain His covenant promises for every individual within the community.
