Why did God command Israel to attack the Midianites, and not the Moabites, when both nations were involved in Israel's downfall?
This command comes at the end of a deeply painful episode in Israel's history. The people, settled in the plains of Moab, were enticed by Moabite women into sexual immorality and, consequently, idolatry, worshipping the local deity Baal-peor.
The Midianite Connection
While the Moabites initiated the seduction, the Midianites played a crucial, perhaps even more insidious, role. They were deeply involved in the plot, likely advising Balak to seek a curse through Balaam and later hosting Balaam himself. It was through their counsel and actions that the Midianite women were specifically used in a deliberate strategy to corrupt Israel and turn them away from God.
A Measured Judgment
God's judgment is always precise. The Moabites were spared direct military action, partly due to a prior instruction (Deuteronomy 2:9) rooted in their shared ancestry with Abraham and Lot, and partly because their sin's measure was not yet full. The Midianites, however, were identified as the primary instigators of the plot, the ones who actively plotted Israel's spiritual ruin through deception and seduction. Therefore, the command to 'vex and smite' them was a direct response to their deep-seated treachery and spiritual warfare against God's chosen people.
