What's easily missed is the significance of Balaam seeing Israel "tribe by tribe." This isn't just a casual observation; it's seeing the divine order and intentionality in God's people, which then triggers the Spirit's powerful, prophetic utterance within him. This sight of their organized, divinely placed encampment, rather than just a mass of people, becomes the catalyst for God's message to flow through Balaam.
And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him, and he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened, the oracle of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down with his eyes uncovered: How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your encampments, O Israel!
English Standard Version (ESV)
After three failed attempts to curse Israel, the frustrated King Balak confronts Balaam, who explains he can only speak what God allows. Balaam then retreats to a high place, and as he surveys the perfectly ordered encampment of the Israelite tribes, God's Spirit powerfully comes upon him, compelling him to pronounce a blessing instead of a curse.
Balaam wasn't just glancing; he was taking in a massive, divinely ordered spectacle. What did seeing Israel arranged by tribe do to him?
Balaam is on Mount Peor, ready to curse Israel as Balak hired him to do. But when he 'lifted up his eyes,' he saw something astonishing: Israel camped 'tribe by tribe.' This wasn't just a random scattering of tents. It was a meticulously organized encampment, reflecting God's order and faithfulness in bringing them out of Egypt and leading them through the wilderness. The sheer sight of this divinely structured nation, living in their designated places, was powerful. It wasn't just the numbers; it was the order that spoke volumes about God's commitment to them.
This ordered sight seems to be the trigger. It's the visual evidence of God's presence and plan for Israel, moving Balaam from his greedy intent to a place where God's Spirit could work.
God's Spirit can move powerfully, even through someone whose heart isn't fully aligned. What does this 'Spirit of God' mean here?
The verse says, 'the Spirit of God came upon him.' This is a crucial moment. Balaam was a hired diviner, seeking to curse Israel for money. But God's Spirit powerfully intervened, not to sanctify Balaam, but to empower him with prophetic utterance. This wasn't the Spirit of God dwelling within Balaam for salvation, but the Spirit of God coming upon him, giving him the ability to speak God's truth.
Think of it like a divine download or a powerful anointing for a specific task. This supernatural influence bypassed Balaam's greedy intentions and forced him to speak words of blessing, not cursing. It's a stark reminder that God is sovereign and can use anyone, even reluctant or wicked individuals, to accomplish His purposes and reveal His will.
