The phrase "the soul of the people was much discouraged" is a subtle but profound clue; it suggests their weariness wasn't just physical, but a deep spiritual discouragement born from a difficult, roundabout path. This wasn't merely a bad road; it was a journey that felt like a step backwards, away from the promised destination, which deeply tested their trust.
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After being denied passage through Edom, the Israelites are forced into a long, circuitous journey around the land, heading toward the Red Sea. This unexpected detour, coupled with the hardships of the terrain, causes the people to grow impatient and lose heart. This frustration quickly escalates into outright rebellion against God and Moses as they face further deprivations.
Ever felt stuck on a detour that seemed to take forever? The Israelites did too, and it tested their faith.
Imagine marching for years, finally seeing the Promised Land, only to be told you have to go around a whole country.
That's the situation here. God explicitly told Moses not to fight with the Edomites (Numbers 20:14-21). So, instead of a direct path, Israel had to take a long, circuitous route along the way to the Red Sea, to bypass Edom.
This wasn't just a physical detour; it was a spiritual one. The original Hebrew for 'discouraged' literally means their 'soul was short' or 'breath was short.' They were weary, frustrated, and impatient. They felt like they were going backward, not forward, especially when they might have had hopes of a quicker, direct route.
A long road can do more than just tire the body; it can sour the soul. See how quickly impatience turned deadly.
The Israelites' discouragement quickly escalated. The text tells us in the very next verse (Numbers 21:5) that they 'spake against God, and against Moses.'
This wasn't just grumbling; it was a direct rebellion against God's leadership and provision. They questioned God's goodness, asking why He brought them out of Egypt only to die in the wilderness.
Their complaint about the 'light bread' (manna) shows a deep dissatisfaction not just with the journey, but with God Himself. They loathed the very food that sustained them, a clear sign of spiritual rebellion.

When grumbling turns to rebellion, God's discipline follows. See how He used a terrifying plague to bring His people back.
God didn't leave the Israelites' rebellion unchecked. Their impatience and defiance were met with a severe, yet purposeful, judgment.
'The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people.' These weren't just ordinary snakes; they were deadly, and their venom brought swift death. This was a tangible, terrifying consequence for their spoken rebellion against God and Moses.
This divine discipline served a crucial purpose. It exposed the depth of their sin and the danger of their spiritual state. It was a bitter medicine designed not to destroy, but to lead them to repentance, so they might recognize their desperate need for God's healing and deliverance.
