Why did God orchestrate Aaron's death and succession on a public mountain?
This wasn't just a private moment for Aaron and Moses. The command to 'bring them up to Mount Hor' was for the entire congregation to witness.
A Visible Succession
God ensured that Aaron's successor, Eleazar, was publicly appointed while Aaron was still alive. Moses stripped Aaron of his priestly garments and vested Eleazar in them. This visible ceremony cemented Eleazar's authority in the eyes of the people. It prevented any doubt or dispute about who the next High Priest would be, especially considering the Israelites' tendency towards questioning authority.
God's Judgment and Grace
This event also served as a stark reminder of God's judgment. Aaron, along with Moses, was barred from entering the Promised Land due to their disobedience at the Waters of Meribah. Aaron's death, occurring publicly and under God's direct command, underscored that even leaders are accountable to God's word. Yet, God's mercy was evident in the honorable way Aaron transitioned, with his son appointed and his people mourning him.
