God provided a way to deal with this pervasive uncleanness. What does this tell us about His character and His plan?
The Water of Separation
The key to purification in this passage is the 'water of separation.' This wasn't just any water; it was mixed with the ashes of the red heifer, a specific sacrifice designed to deal with the uncleanness resulting from contact with death.
God's Provision, Not Ours
The commentaries emphasize that this water cleansed not by any inherent virtue in itself, but solely by God's appointment. It was a visible sign pointing to a deeper reality: true cleansing comes from God's divine provision, not from human effort or merit.
Pointing to Christ and the Spirit
While this was an Old Testament ritual, its purpose was to instruct God's people. The ashes symbolized the atoning sacrifice of Christ (the 'red heifer' pointing to His sacrifice), and the running water symbolized the purifying work of the Holy Spirit. Without the sprinkling of this water, the person remained unclean. This foreshadows how we need both Christ's sacrifice and the Spirit's application of that sacrifice to truly be cleansed from sin.
