Numbers 18:8-10

What does Numbers 18:8-10 mean?

This isn't just about the priests getting paid; it's about their provision being directly tied to their sacred office and consecration by anointing. God declares these offerings are theirs "by reason of the anointing" – their identity and calling as priests are the very basis for their sustenance.

Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, “Behold, I have given you charge of the contributions made to me, all the consecrated things of the people of Israel. I have given them to you as a portion and to your sons as a perpetual due. This shall be yours of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, every grain offering of theirs and every sin offering of theirs and every guilt offering of theirs, which they render to me, shall be most holy to you and to your sons. In a most holy place shall you eat it. Every male may eat it; it is holy to you.

What Numbers 18:8-10 means

After outlining the weighty responsibilities and penalties for the priests and Levites in serving the Tabernacle, God now addresses Aaron directly to establish their provision. This passage clarifies that the "heave offerings" and all consecrated gifts from the people are to serve as the priests' portion, ensuring their livelihood and sustenance as they dedicate themselves to the Lord's service. This divine provision is not a reward for merit but a gift tied to their sacred office and an eternal covenant.

A Sacred Trust and Portion

God doesn't just give His servants tasks; He ensures they're cared for. In this verse, God explicitly assigns the offerings back to Aaron and his sons.

In Numbers 18:8, God establishes a clear system for the support of the priests. He tells Aaron, 'Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the people of Israel.' This wasn't just administrative oversight; it was a direct bestowal of these consecrated gifts as their rightful portion. The language emphasizes that these offerings, set apart by the people for God, were now designated by God Himself for the sustenance and honor of His appointed ministers. It highlights God's commitment to His servants, ensuring they would be provided for as they carried out their sacred duties.

Anointing Seals the Right to Receive

Why were the priests specifically designated to receive these offerings? The anointing oil wasn't just ceremonial; it carried immense significance for their role and rights.

The phrase 'by reason of the anointing' in verse 8 is key. Aaron and his sons were anointed, setting them apart for a special, sacred service to God. This consecration by anointing wasn't merely symbolic; it was the divine authorization that granted them the right to receive the offerings. As commentators note, this anointing was the basis of their priestly office and, by extension, their entitlement to the designated portions of the people's consecrated gifts. It underscores that their role was not self-appointed but divinely ordained, and their provision was tied directly to this sacred, Spirit-empowered commission.
