God made a solemn oath, a vow to Abraham and his descendants. Yet, a whole generation turned their backs on His promise. What does it mean to 'despise' God's word?
In Numbers 14, God's oath to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites hangs heavy in the air. He swore to their fathers, a promise sealed by His own character. But when the spies returned with terrifying reports, the people chose fear over faith.
This choice wasn't just a simple lack of belief; it was a rejection, a 'despising' of God's promise and, by extension, God Himself. They acted as if God's oath was worthless, His power insufficient.
Verse 23 starkly states the consequence: 'none of those who despised me shall see it.' This wasn't arbitrary punishment, but the natural outcome of their rejection. If you don't believe the promise, you can't enter into its fulfillment.
