This highlights that leadership in God’s service requires not just appointment, but also discernment of character and wisdom gained through experience. It shows God valuing practical understanding of people, not just divine designation.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Israelites are complaining bitterly about the lack of meat and longing for their life in Egypt, even as God provides manna. Moses is overwhelmed by the people's constant grumbling and pleads with God to relieve him of the burden. In response, God instructs Moses to gather seventy elders to share the responsibility, promising to impart His Spirit to them.
Moses felt overwhelmed, carrying the immense burden of leading millions of Israelites. What was God's solution?
In response to Moses' cry of exhaustion, the Lord didn't just offer sympathy; He provided practical, divine help. God instructed Moses to gather seventy elders of Israel to stand with him at the Tabernacle. These weren't just any men; they were described as 'elders of the people and officers over them,' men known for their wisdom and experience. This established a precedent for shared leadership and counsel, recognizing that even divinely appointed leaders need support and assistance.
Why seventy men specifically? Does this number hold any special meaning in the biblical narrative?
The number seventy frequently appears in Scripture and often symbolizes completeness or a full representation. It's formed by multiplying seven (often associated with divine perfection or covenant) by ten (representing worldly fullness or completeness). This council of seventy, therefore, could represent a complete or full body of leaders appointed by God to assist Moses. This established body is often seen as the precursor to the Sanhedrin, the Jewish high court.
