This verse reveals a crucial distinction: the Levites weren't counted among the other tribes for military purposes, but were instead appointed to serve the Tabernacle. Their role wasn't just carrying its components, but also ministering to it and camping around it, signifying their unique, protected position as guardians of God's presence.
But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle.
