English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of a massive census of the Israelite men, ordered by God, taken shortly after they left Egypt. The goal was to count every man fit for military service, organized by tribe, family, and household, providing a detailed picture of the nation's strength as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. The numbering of the tribe of Benjamin, like those before it, meticulously records its contribution to this national tally for war.
Why did God command such a detailed census of the Israelite men? It wasn't just for record-keeping.
This wasn't your typical headcount. The Lord commanded this extensive numbering of Israel for several crucial reasons:
Why were the Levites left out of this grand military census? They had a different, vital role.
While the focus was on the able-bodied men for warfare and national organization, the Levites were intentionally excluded from this census.
